What is Pancake Day?

Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, traditionally marks the day families would use up rich ingredients like eggs, milk and sugar before the Christian season of Lent. Over time, this tradition turned into the Pancake Day we know and love today.

In other countries like France, the USA and Brazil, it is known as Carnival or ‘Mardis Gras’ (which translates to ‘Fat Tuesday’) and celebrated with music, dancing, colourful clothing, floats and a variety of regional traditions.

When is Pancake Day?

Pancake Day usually falls in February or early March, depending on the year. In 2026, Pancake Day takes place on Tuesday 17th February.
