Fireworks Displays Near Our Holiday Home Locations
Bonfire Night is nearly upon us, where the skies above will be illuminated in an array of beautiful colours, and fireworks bang and whistle through the skies to the amazement of onlookers below. But what exactly is Bonfire Night, and where did fireworks actually come from? We’ve taken a look at a brief history below, as well as some of the most exciting fireworks celebrations to visit in Norfolk, Suffolk, North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire; all close to our UK holiday parks!
Who was Guy Fawkes?
The vast majority of you will know the name Guy Fawkes, and the story of the Gunpowder Plot. But just in case you need a brush up on history, here’s the main points: In November 1605, Guy Fawkes led a gang of Roman Catholic activists in an attempt to assassinate King James I, by blowing up the Palace of Westminster during the state opening of Parliament.
Guido โGuyโ Fawkes is the name remembered, but it was in fact Warwickshire-born Robert Catesby who planned the whole event. His plan obviously didn’t work out, and the conspirators were apprehended before any damage was caused.
How Guy Fawkes Led to Bonfire Night
Following the failed plot, November 5th was declared a national day of thanksgiving, with the celebrations beginning on the first anniversary of the plot, in 1606, and of course continuing thereafter. The House of Parliament is still โsearchedโ today before the state opening, although this is more ceremonial than serious.
Fireworks are said to represent the explosives that were never used on that fateful night. Many people still make โguysโ – effigies to Fawkes โ and throw them on the bonfire, in reference to his act of treason. โGuyโ is of course a synonym for man, but it used to mean someone who was ugly and repulsive in reference to Fawkes!

Frequently Asked Questions
Most of the displays in this guide sit within easy reach of a Tingdene holiday park. In Norfolk and Suffolk, the Lowestoft and Yarmouth RUFC Fireworks Extravaganza and the low-noise display at Wroxham Barns are both close to North Denes Caravan Park and Caldecott Hall Country Park. In East Yorkshire, Sledmere House and Kilham are both a short drive from South Shore Park. In Lincolnshire, Autumn Lights and the Aviation Heritage Centre fireworks are within reach of Mablethorpe Chalet and Caravan Park. Browse all our parks to find the right base for your Bonfire Night break.
Most organised fireworks events donโt allow dogs on site, and for good reason. The noise and crowds can be stressful for animals, even breeds that seem unbothered at home. Heveningham Hall Fireworks, for example, explicitly does not permit dogs. If youโre visiting with a dog, the better option is to base yourself at a Tingdene holiday park, enjoy the area during the day, and let the dog settle in the evening while you head out. Several of our parks are dog-friendly, including Caldecott Hall Country Park in Norfolk and South Shore Park in East Yorkshire.
Yes, a few. The Low Bang Fireworks at Wroxham Barns in Norfolk is designed specifically for younger children and anyone who finds traditional displays too loud. You book a pitch for up to six people, bring your own chairs and blankets, and enjoy the display at a gentler volume with child-friendly music and food trucks. In East Yorkshire, the Sledmere House Musical Fireworks Spectacular now includes a low-noise display earlier in the evening alongside the main show. Both are good options if youโre travelling with young children or sensory-sensitive visitors.
The season typically runs from late October through to early November, with Bonfire Night on 5th November as the focal point. Some events, like the Musical Fireworks Spectacular at Sledmere House, fall in the last week of October, while others such as Heveningham Hall Fireworks and the Lowestoft and Yarmouth RUFC Extravaganza run in early November. A handful of displays take place on or around 5th November itself. If youโre planning a stay around Bonfire Night, itโs worth checking our Norfolk events guide, Suffolk events guide, and Lincolnshire events guide for what else is on in the area while youโre there.
